Doris Evelyn Wineland

Doris was born November 19, 1933 in Chariton Iowa to Albert Robert and Lilly Fern (Grove) Burdess. Her family had fourteen children, five sisters and eight brothers. Her sisters: Twyla (Dale Gochanhour), Lyla Jean AKA Jean (Ken Simons), Beverly AKA Bev (Everett Stillian), Twin, Mary Frances, Judy (Dennis Welch). Her brothers: Warren (Dollie), Lester (Dorthy), Lyle Gilbert AKA Gib, Glenn (Mary), Dean (Carol), Twin, Marvin Franklin AKA Frank (Mary), John (Bev), Norman (Sharon). Her in-laws were: Arwilda AKA Tillie (Norm) Cope, Charles (Hildred) Wineland, and Calvin (Eulah Mae) Wineland. From her family she had 44 nieces and nephews.

Doris was united in marriage to Lawrence Gene (Larry) Wineland June 5th 1953. They were blessed with three children; Terri Jo Joelson (Iner), Douglas Allan Wineland (Danni), Dennis Earl Wineland (Robin). Doris had 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Doris loved her family deeply and family always came first. She was a caregiver to everyone she knew. She would make sure her kids had their ball uniforms and sports wear and gear as well as musical instruments and dance costumes. She would always make sure everyone got where they needed to be. She so enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports, play in the band, and sing in the chorus. Many people were helped by her and Larry moving them. She loved her dogs of which she had several. She probably enjoyed the dachshunds the most. She was a known great cook and was always cooking. If you visited her home you were going to be eating. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Sundays, Birthdays or just stopping by to visit her were all great occasional opportunities for her to share her love through cooking meals. Doris and Larry raised many vegetable gardens and she had quite a green thumb. Much of the food she fed everyone came from those gardens and in the fall you would find her in the kitchen canning and freezing. Chocolate cake fresh from the oven with melted butter was a favorite. Of course there were always toll house chocolate chips, butter scotch oatmeals, peanut butter cookies, pies and etc.. The aroma of fresh bread and cinnamon rolls, fried chicken, pot roast, baked ham, and on Sunday evenings popcorn, did I mention green beans with bacon and mashed potatoes with sour cream and the best gravies?

In addition to cooking Doris loved knitting. She made several afghan blankets and sweaters. She loved to dance with Larry, they were members of a square dance club and spent many Saturday evenings at dances. Doris was quite competitive, this may have come from the big family? She played softball and basketball during her school years and also for Pioneer Hibred. Doris liked to bet on a horse race or two. She also enjoyed playing slot machines. She loved to play Yahtzee and card games. There were many nights when she didn't get much sleep because she would be up late playing Yahtzee with her sister-in-law, Tillie. Her and Larry were members of the Pilots class at Highland Park Christian Church. She loved having them over to play cards. She was so proud of her home. She was so disheartened to sell it after 55 years of living there. When her and Larry moved there she didn't even want to get out of the car and go in to look at it. Over the years they added on four times and remodeled several times as well as adding a new garage and improving the efficiency with solar and geothermal heat.

Doris and Larry were travelers and campers. Many Friday evenings one would find them on the road to visit family in such places as Kansas City, Omaha, Chicago, and to southern Iowa to relatives who lived on farms. They started camping in a fold down and took their children to many parks and lakes in Iowa, Missouri and Minnesota. They later had a bigger camper and three motor homes. In addition they took family vacations to Phoenix, South Dakota, and Florida. Doris was a Princes House Crystal consultant and earned several cruise trips where they traveled to Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, New Zealand, Alaska and many other places. She also enjoyed her Princess House Crystal booth at the Iowa State Fair for several years.

Doris was member of Highland Park Christian Church for 49 yeas where she held many positions: Deaconess, Elder, Teacher and mentor. She served and prepared many of the meals for receptions. As busy as she was, Doris still found time to work outside the house. She worked for Mercy Hospital for 8 years and also for Des Moines General Hospital, Bankers Life and Lenox industries as a payroll and accounting clerk. For many years she sold Princess House Home Accessories. She and Larry actually went on several cruises that she won for high sales. She spent at least two weeks a year working at the Iowa State Fair and if that wasn't enough, she was also a day care provider.

Doris was a fighter and beat a burst appendix, breast cancer two times, the removal of her gallbladder, pancreatitis, diabetes, congestive heart failure and COPD. In the end the breast cancer metastasized and spread through out her body. She never complained and was courageous until the end . She went home to be with her God March 23, 2021. You will be greatly missed and always remembered with love. Until we meet you again we love you Doris!
