Mary Smith

September 3, 1948 — July 9, 2015

Mary Smith

Mary Margaret (Stubbs) Smith was born September 3, 1948 in Mississippi. Mary was born with a twin brother (Gary), the last of fourteen children born to Leo and Ethelene McLaurin Stubbs.

Mary attended McLaurin Vocational Attendance Center in Magee, Mississippi where she graduated in 1966. Some of Mary's sisters had moved north looking for better opportunities. She decided to follow them and moved to Des Moines, Iowa.

Mary was employed by the city of Des Moines as a property tax adjustor. Her attention to detail served her well in that position. Mary was very intelligent, and her children marveled at her range of interests as she played against the contestants on the television show , "Jeopardy". Mary could answer all the questions! Mary was also an excellent cook, everything she touched turned to Heaven. Her sweet potato pie and corned beef and cabbage were wonderful! She enjoyed watching the cooking shows and gardening. Mary didn't have any grey areas. She was very opinionated and it was either one way or the other. She would let you know which way she thought you should go, whether you asked or not. It was all in love.

Mary passed from time into eternity on July 9, 2015. Preceding her in death were her parents, Leo and Ethelene Stubbs and nine of her siblings.

Mary is survived by her children, Michael Stubbs (Kelly Willis) and Shannon Johnson (Tony Massey), her grand children, Michael Stubbs, Jr., Alyssa Bradley, Bryce Stubbs, DeShawn Long, Sr., Ralaiisha Johnson, and Ma'Rai Johnson McCallop; her twin brother, Gary Stubbs and brothers, Lynell (Lucille), Charles and Clyde (Addie) Stubbs; her sister, Dr. Doris Woods and brother in law Jack Murray Sr.; 5 great grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
