Deotis Coleman passed away on August 31, 2023. 

Deotis Coleman Sr was born January 6, 1940, to the late Lenzy Coleman and Clara Rosetta Rueben in Eutaw, Alabama. He was educated in the school System of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and graduated from Druid High School. Shortly after high school he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Ft Jackson, South Carolina.

Deotis confessed hope in Christ at an early age and united with Elizabeth Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. After moving to Iowa, he united with Mt Hebron Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully with the music department until his illness and death. He was musically talented, he played guitar, harmonica, keyboard, and tambourine. Deotis throughout the years played blues at various venues and well known for playing at “Chefs Kitchen” and “Fat Tuesday” restaurants for many years. His Nickname was “Big D.” His favorite saying at the end of each song was “Well All Right.”

Deotis met and married Shirley Ann Miller, the love of his life when he was 21 years old, and she was 16 and they were married 62 years. To this union four children were born – Denise, Deotis Jr, Dwayne, and David. Pops loved to fish (but couldn’t catch a fish). He taught his grandchildren and great grandchildren to how to play guitar as well. Pops would sing at every family gathering and lead prayer saying, “All minds clear.” He loved to eat Dani and Shirley’s cooking. He loved cars, especially traveling by car. He even taught Janessa to drive at 9 years old. He loved to talk and was very personable, no one was a stranger to him.

Deotis Coleman, Sr passed away August 31, 2023, He was proceeded in death by his parents, Lenzy Coleman, and Clara Rosetta Rueben Hargrove; two brothers, Cleo Coleman and Syvester Coleman; Sister, Bessie Wilson; Son, Deotis Coleman Jr; and Daughter in Law, Teresa Coleman; granddaughter Jaylin Santiful.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley Ann Coleman; Children; Daughters Denise (Paul) Cavil, Danette Hester; Sons – Dwayne Coleman, Tyrone “Steve” Clay, David Coleman; Brother - Deacon Frank Robinson; Sister Rosia Lee Howard; grandchildren, Steven (Tiphani) James, Leslie (Kemo) Williams-Robinson, Aaron Coleman Sr, David Coleman, Dwayne Coleman Jr, Darren Coleman, Daniel Coleman, Sarah (Kevin) Jones, Xaria Coleman, William Coleman, Janessa (Jerrae) Coleman-Lindsey, Sierra Coleman, Conner Coleman, Darius Coleman, Saniya Coleman, Dawane Coleman, Ly’daisha Coleman, Shaquille Todd, Steven Clay, Ian Clay, Tykia Clay, Ebony Cavil, China Cavil; 28 great grandchildren and a host of bonus children and grandchildren, beloved nieces, nephews, extended Family and Friends.
