Harold Thomas Sr., a beloved and cherished member of the Des Moines community, has passed away at the age of 81. Harold, known for his warm smile and kind heart, will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Born on December 23, 1941, in Missouri, Harold grew up with a strong sense of family values and a love for helping others. He attended school in Missouri before embarking on his successful career. Harold dedicated many years to Aramark Uniform Services in Des Moines before retiring.

Harold was not only admired for his work ethic but also for his vibrant personality. He had an incredible knack for fixing things and was often referred to as a jack of all trades. Friends and family knew they could always rely on him for guidance, support, and a helping hand. His wisdom and profound talks were sources of inspiration for those around him.

One of Harold's favorite pastimes was fishing. Whether on the calm waters of a nearby lake or teaching his beloved grandkids how to cast their lines, he found great joy in these moments spent outdoors. Additionally, Harold cherished quality time with his family and made it a priority to create lasting memories together. He had an undeniable passion for working on cars and shared this skill with his loved ones.

Harold will forever be remembered as "Papa Smurf," a nickname that showcased both his endearing personality and the immense love he had for his family. His desire to be involved extended beyond his immediate household as he actively contributed to the East University Church of God and Christ community.

Harold is survived by his special friend, Ruth Robinson, who stood by his side through thick and thin. He leaves behind a loving legacy through his children: Raedean Spencer of Des Moines, IA; John Spencer of Sioux City, IA; Harold Thomas Jr. of Des Moines, IA; Mark Robinson of Des Moines, IA; Anna Robinson of Des Moines, IA; and Tamara Robinson of Atlanta, GA.

His passing is mourned by his brothers Larry Thomas of Davenport, IA, Rick Smith of Middleton, Wisconsin, and his nieces, nephews, extended family, and numerous friends.

In addition to his surviving family, Harold joins his parents, sisters Nellie Mae Roberts and Sherlene Collins, and brother Bobby Thomas in eternal peace. Although he is no longer physically with us, the memories and lessons he imparted will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Harold Thomas Sr. was a kind-hearted man who had an indescribable impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His unwavering love for his family and friends and his unwavering dedication to helping others will continue to inspire us all. As we celebrate the life he lived, let us remember Harold as the incredible person he was—a beacon of strength and a source of endless love.

In honor of Harold's memory, a memorial service will be held at East University Church of God In Christ, Des Moines, Iowa, on December 23, 2023, at 1:00 pm. Friends and family are invited to attend and share their cherished memories of this remarkable individual. A repass will follow.
