Myrtis Merrill

Myrtis Merrill passed away on March 14, 2020. Services were held at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Laurel, Mississippi

Myrtis Newell Merrill was born on January 9, 1956 to Lum and Gracie Newell in Laurel, Mississippi. She graduated from Heidelberg High School in Heidelberg, Mississippi.

On December 2, 1974 Myrtis married the love of her life George Merrill. From this union two children were born, Azalea and Luciana.

Myrtis was the caretaker of the family. She was generous, caring and patient. She would give you the last money she had. Like the virtuous woman of bible days she saw to her household. She kept a clean house and food on the table. She could cook her behind off. Her specialty was all kinds of soul food. When Myrtis wasnt cooking she loved sewing and decorating. She would travel back to Mississippi frequently to see her "folks". Family was VERY important. Myrtis loved to go to yard sales and thrift stores. She never met a garage sale she didnt like. She loved shopping and eating out, but the most important thing in Myrtices life was her grandchildren!

On March 14, 2020 Myrtis made a peaceful transition from earth to heaven. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lum and Gracie Newell; her husband, George Merrill; and her brothers, Easter Newell; and sister, Dorothy Bolton.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Azaela (Darryl) Green, Luciana Merrill; 5 grandchildren; Thomas Arrington Jr., Candies Merrill, Kyeisha Johnson, Carkessa Merrill and James Patterson; 13 great grandchildren; siblings, Lum Newell Jr, Patricia Jones, Betty Abney, Sammy Newell and Jimmy Newell; and a host of other relatives and friends
