Nehemiah was born on June 10, 1982, in Liberal, Kansas, to parents Arnold and Pinney(Beer) Hellems. Nehemiah grew up in Liberal, and later Durant, Oklahoma, attending Liberal High School in Liberal Kansas, and was a part of the wrestling and boxing teams. Once out of high school, he went on to become a welder, and was a manager at Billey Simms BBQ for a time.

Boxing was a big part of Nehemiah’s life. He was a two-time golden glove boxer, as well as an MMA Boxer. Equal to his love of boxing was his love of animals. He loved all animals, though dogs were a favorite. He kept a black widow spider as a pet, and even once rescued a porcupine! Nehemiah also had a deep passion for fishing. It gave him a connection to nature and a sense of peace. Above all, Nehemiah had a deep love for his family, most especially for his daughter, Sabriena.

There are many who will miss Nehemiah and treasure his memory. They include his daughter, Sabriena Dewett of Durant, Oklahoma; father Arnold Hellems of Des Moines, Iowa; siblings Andre Johnson of St Louis, Missouri, Billy McLaughlin of Minnesota, and Amber (Joseph Robinson) Hellems of Des Moines, Iowa; aunts and uncles Willie (Teresa) “Tojo” Hellems and Oney (Lou) Hellems, Pinky Hellems and Gertie Jackson; nieces and nephews Logan Farrell, Makiya Ponder, Jurni Mitchell, Malina Villa, Giovanna Villa, Gracie Villa, Elijah Villa, Isaiah Rosas, Gabriel Rosas, and Arekel McLaughlin; as well as a whole host of cousins.
