James W. Carter, Sr. was born on January 27, 1952 to Aaron Bethal and Alene Naomi (Warren) Carter Sr., in Des Moines, IA. He was educated in the Des Moines Public Schools where he graduated from Tech High School. James continued his education at Des Moines Area Community College, Iowa State University and Colorado State University. James loved learning and respected educational pursuits. His education ranged from being a CNA to Auto mechanics to earning a Doctorate in Divinity.
James was united in marriage to Antoinette Murray Carter in 2011.
James was raised in a God fearing family and found Christ at an early age. As an adult he was a member of Bread of Life Church of God in Christ. Along his Christian journey James received the call to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was licensed under his father at the Forest Avenue Church of God In Christ. In addition to his service at Bread of Life, James founded the Mount Olive Ministries Network. Its purpose was serving senior citizens, veterans and disabled individuals in need of assistance.
James was always known to be a visionary with dreams of making an impact in the community in which he lived. During his free time, he enjoyed joking around, playing the guitar and mentoring youth. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his sons.
James transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life on November 21, 2020. He was preceded in death by his father, Bishop Aaron B. Carter; mother, Alene N. Carter; siblings, Dr. Aaron B. Carter, Jr., Pastor Elmer J. Carter, Carolyn N. Carter-Whitted, Linda P. Carter-Buckner, Patricia A. Carter, Joanne M. Carter and Michael K. Carter.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Antoinette Carter; children, James W. (Maila) Carter Jr., Kerrie Carter, Quest (Dalina) Carter and Brent (Christine) Carter; grandchildren, Ryan, Christian, Zechariahs, Ellieyah, Zephaniah, Shawntay Murray, Ashley, Isabelle, Tara, Zea, Noah, Malachi and Gianna; sister, Mother Barbara A. Carter-Johnson; brothers, Reverend Leslie H. Carter, Reverend Clarence R. Carter and Pastor Stephen A. Carter and a host of other relatives and friends.
