Sherman Russell Burrell

Sherman Russell Burrell, was born August 7, 1926 to Warren and Effie Mae (Cavil) Burrell in Oralabor, IA.

Russell (as everyone called him) attended school in the Ankeny Public School District. After graduation, Russell enlisted in the United States Navy. During WWII, Russell was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base as Logistical Support. Following his discharge from the Navy, Russell returned to Des Moines and went to work for the Des Moines Public School System as a bus driver and various trucking companies. He later ran his own trucking and hauling business until his retirement after losing his sight.

Russell was a workaholic. Whenever you saw him, he was on his way to work or from another job. He carried his tool belt all the time. When he wasn't working you could find him outside, tending a garden or playing golf. Russell also like to bowl, listen to the blues or watch sports on TV. And of course, Russell loved kids! He raised many of his grandchildren just like they were his own.

And suddenly, he was gone. Russell answered the Master's call to rest on December 2, 2012. He was 86 years old. Waiting to welcome Russell to the other side were his parents and siblings, Thelma Macintosh, Lucretia Weathers, Effie Smith Oletha Rich, Vera Green, James Leland, Wesley, Warren and John Burrell and an infant brother.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Cecil LaVern Burrell; his children, Joey (Shawn), Sherman Jr, Dennis, Ricky and Cheryl Burrell; children and grandchildren that he raised as his own, Edward (Yolanda) Holt, Jr, Lesia and Harold Holt, Stephanie Holt, Arichica (Steve) Prescott, Bill (Sandy) Williams, Trudy Holt, Juanita (Wayne) Jackman, Melvin Adams, Wallace Kipper; his sister, Marion Daughtrey and a host of great grandchildren, great great grand children, numerous extended family and many friends.
